Infectious diseases have plagued mankind throughout human history. Vaccines teach our immune system to identify a potential foe and prepare our innate defenses to react quickly and decisively to resist an invader.
Vaccines are effective but not perfect. Sometimes the immune system fails to learn the identity of a foe or “forgets” over time, so we become susceptible to infection again. In a few cases, the immune system reacts violently to the vaccine, causing an allergic reaction. Some individuals should not or cannot be immunized. How do you identify these individuals?

Because most people living today have never seen a case of diptheria, polio, tetanus, or measles, the benefits of immunization may be underestimated. The risk of a serious adverse reaction is often overestimated due to sensationalized reports in popular media. Is the Autism scare an example of this?

There is no perfect solution to the age-old battle against infectious diseases. Clearly, immunizations decrease suffering, reduce disabilities, and save lives – not in every instance or for every person who gets vaccinated. But our society is better off if we protect the majority by immunizing every individual who can safely receive vaccines. What potential risks do my neighbor’s children, who were not immunized, pose to my family?
